2010 Recap
Legends Breakaway has had an eventful fall season, staying plenty busy playing some of the best teams in the country. The team went on a four week splurge of playing games that sent them traveling to Arizona for FWRL, Temecula for the FWRL playoffs, Surf Cup in San Diego, and finally North Carolina for the National League.
Breakaway has had a healthy lineup for some time now and because of that they were able to not only play well in the FWRL but win the playoff and secure a spot in Boise Idaho for the Regional tournament in June. This is an exciting time for the team as they now will have been in Regionals three out of the four years the girls have been together, something only few teams in the country have done.
Surf Cup brought a whole new dynamic than the weeks prior, letting the girls of Breakaway showcase themselves to tons of college coaches. The team did not advance but also did not drop a game in the tournament. Still motivated, they had to prepare for the toughest challenge of the season yet, National League.
Playing in conditions the team had never been in before was going to be a challenge in itself, then on top of that the girls of Breakaway had to play against VSA (#14 in the country), JB Marine Wipke (#5 in the country), and Soccers (#36 in the country). The team performed as expected and went 3-0 in the first leg of the competition. The snow could not slow down the players as they scored 9 goals and only gave up 1. The final game of the weekend vs Hurricanes had to be re scheduled due to the snow covered fields, neither team wanted to chance any injuries.
Breakaway will be off for a much needed break and will get back together in 2011 to prepare for the 2nd leg of the National League hoping to punch their ticket to the National Championships in July.
Breakaway & Legends
The 2009/2010 season was a brutal grind for the girls of Breakaway. Wins were hard to come by and players had to face much adversity throughout the entire year. The team played several games with no substitutes and even played games with 10 players on many occasions. The fast paced style that Breakaway likes to play usually means that players need more rest throughout the match to keep their intensity high the entire game. Without any rotation, girls were asked to do things their bodies were not prepared for. Injuries were a constant and the team was in a position they had never been before. What was the next step for this squad? With players and parents scared to join a team that wasn't labeled "premier", where would Breakaway find what they were looking for? They not only needed quality athletes to fill their roster but they needed committed people who trusted the staff's training ways and ideas of exposure to colleges that the existing players had already been getting.
After months of research the Breakaway staff found players and parents willing and ready to join the team. Two attacking players and one defensive player gave Breakaway the boost they were searching for. As excited as the team was there was still more that needed to be done. With a rigorous season ahead the team was still lacking something........
The relationship between Legends and Breakaway began to form. The DOC of Legends liked the way Breakaway had done things to this point and the staff at Breakaway respected what Legends stood for in a tough competitive environment such as southern California. The two agreed that it was in the best interest of both parties to join forces.
Breakaway brings a style to the club that is noticeable to colleges and recruiting. The club will benefit in many ways by having Legends teams being included in the tour stops and recruiting ideas that Breakaway brings. Breakaway benefits from joining an established club and being surrounded by a talented coaching staff thus having access to everything Legends have to offer. Players from both parties have already reaped the benefits of this merger by playing in friendlies and college showcases.
There is much more to come and this partnership will already see two of it's teams traveling together in December when the u-17 Legends and the u-16 Legends Breakaway travel to the first stop of the National League in North Carolina.
